The Resettlement Support Center Asia (RSC Asia), funded by the US State Department Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM), assists persons throughout Asia seeking permanent resettlement in the United States. Responsible for a portfolio of 37 countries, RSC Asia: prepares refugee applications for the United States Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) using START (a State Department-managed data system that supports the arrival and resettlement of refugees through technology); provides information to resettlement agencies about arriving refugees and offers cultural orientation training to refugees bound for the United States. RSC Asia is based in Bangkok, Thailand, with a sub-office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.Job Overview/Summary:The Senior Staff Interpreter provides operational support to all departments in scheduling staff/contract Interpreters and providing language support services for applicants to the US refugee admissions program. The Senior Staff Interpreter acts as an interpreter of oral statements given in refugee languages into the English Language, and vice versa, for RSC Prescreen interviews, US Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) interviews, and for Cultural Orientation (CO) training.Major Responsibilities:
  • Manage staff /contract Interpreter work schedule based on language needs in coordination with the RSC Program Managers.
  • Monitor interpreter performance and provide feedback for performance development.
  • Track interpreting assignments for program statistical purposes, prepare and submit a monthly report to supervisor.
  • Provide training to interpreters regarding professional interpretation services in accordance with USRAP Policies and Procedures.
  • Assist in a recruitment and in mentoring new interpreters as needed.
  • Identify gaps and training needed as part of the professional development of interpreter team tracking.
  • Assist in providing Annual IRC Way, Fraud and Ethics (F&E) Training to the CBAs and local contractors.
  • Update the interpreter training materials video and power point presentation into local languages (Karen/Burmese), review and update any new terminology into interpreter glossary when it is made available.
  • Provide language support to Cultural Orientation (CO) team in CO materials review.
  • Provide interpretation during RSC assignments for US immigration, Prescreening, Pre-Post interviews and Cultural Orientation (CO) training.
  • Translate documents from Karen/Burmese languages to English language and vice versa.
  • Perform other relevant duties as directed by supervisor.

  • At least two years of relevant professional experience in interpretation services is required
  • Resettlement processing or other NGO experience is preferred.
  • Previous work in a multi-cultural environment is advantageous.

Language and Computer Skills:
  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills.
  • Perfect command of one or more of the following: Karen-S'gaw, Karen-Pwo, and/or Burmese
  • Computer Literacy -competence in Ms Office i.e. Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Ability to type 40 words per minute.
Working Environment:The position is located at the RSC office in Mae Sot, Thailand. The position will require domestic travel to support Program delivery of USRAP processing throughout Thailand, including to remote border areas. Limited international travel should also be expected.
